If you’ve already started playing and you find yourself thinking that you don’t understand anything that’s happening on the screen, don’t worry. Everything is explained here.
Who are pokemon?
Our explanation won’t be quite as full without a short history of the pokemon world. It will be especially useful for those born not so long ago or, on the other hand, for those who have long forgotten about pokemon.
The word «pokemon» comes from the English «Pocket Monster». A whole super popular series of games, films, comic strips, toys and other things dedicated to these creatures was launched in Japan in 1996. During their existence pokemon have been both at the top and at the bottom. And now we witness a sudden revival of the glorious idea.
And here’s the most important thing you need to understand before playing Pokemon GO. During the 20 years of its existence the pokemon world has progressed so much, has developed so many written and unwritten rules, traditions and conventions that there’s no way a profane person is able to figure them out immediately.
So here’s the conclusion:
If you’ve come across something unusual and weird in Pokemon GO, don’t try to find a logical explanation. It just happens to be normal in this universe. Relax and accept everything as it is. Period.
So we’ve learned that the main characters in this universe are pocket monsters – pokemon. They can be different: there are 721 kinds all in all but only 174 of them are currently included in the game. However, that’s pretty much enough for the start. After all, every pokemon has its own set of unique characteristics, its own history and its own path of evolution.
The player’s first task is to catch pokemon. But you can only do it outdoors as the game is part and parcel of our real world. In order to play you need to enable GPS and mobile data, launch the game and go for a walk. All your movements will be displayed on the app’s map.
How to find and catch pokemon?
The map doesn’t give you any exact locations of pokemon. However, there are indirect signs of their presence. First of all, pay attention to those places where grass and leaves are moving on the map.
Keep an eye on the indicator in the bottom right-hand corner. It shows the pokemon wandering somewhere nearby. But, I’ll say it again, there’s no guarantee you’ll find a pokemon on the way. And it’s this vagueness that makes the game even more interesting.
When you’ve come across a pokemon, its icon will appear on the map next to you. Tap on it and the capture screen will emerge. At the bottom of the screen you’ll see a Pokeball (a red and white disc) and right in front of you – a pokemon. Take the Pokeball and throw it in the monster’s direction but be careful to do it when the pokemon is in the green circle. A couple of tries is enough to understand how it works.
Caught’em, so what’s next?
One of the most important tasks in Pokemon GO is to catch at least one pokemon from each category available. Your collection is kept in Pokedex and you should aim to complete the collection.
However that’s not the only thing pokemon exist for. They can also fight each other and they do it according to a set of some quite elaborate rules that we’ll talk about soon. In brief, every monster has its own unique characteristics that can be boosted in training. These include Hit Points (HP), Combat Points (CP) and Moves.
Besides, there’s the pokemon ability to evolve. It’s useful when you’re trying to catch a pokemon that’s difficult to find outdoors. For example, if there are a lot of Poliwag around you but no Poliwhirl, you should catch as many Poliwag as you can and one of them will evolve into Poliwhirl. Everything clear?
And what are these rotating things on the map?
They are Pokestops – special hiding places that usually contain Pokeballs, Pokemon Eggs and other cool things. They are usually located in some places of interest, for example, public art installations or historical monuments. So while playing Pokemon GO you can get to know some fascinating places you’ve never heard about before.
When you come up close enough to a Pokestop, it’ll grow in size and your phone will vibrate. Tap on it and the photo of the place in a disc will appear in front of you. Swipe and the disc will start to rotate throwing bonuses around. Tap on each to pick it up.
And what about those high towers?
When you reach level 5, you’ll be invited to join a team. And it’s those towers (called «gyms» in the game terminology) where all the teams are located. You can put the pokemon you caught in an open gym or your team’s gym and each player can only put one pokemon in one gym. You can train the pokemon you’ve put in a gym in battles: this way you’ll increase the gym’s prestige level.
The more the prestige level is, the harder it is to win the gym over. If the prestige level is close to zero, the defending team loses control over the gym and then you or another player can take over by putting your or their pokemon there. So basically a team that has the widest range of coolest monsters can capture other gyms bit by bit.
And here let’s put an end to our Pokemon GO lesson, otherwise you’d be just overwhelmed. Note that although this article gives important information it’s far from detailed. A thick encyclopedia wouldn’t be enough to fully explain the world of pokemon, so I suggest that you make further discoveries on your own.
So what is Pokemon GO?
- If you enjoy walking and adventures are your cup of tea, explore interesting places around you while looking for pokemon and Pokestops.
- If you like card games and evolution simulators, collect all the pokemon in Pokedex and watch them evolve.
- If you prefer team-based multiplayer games and battles, fight to take over the gyms and make your team the best in town.
Pokemon GO is a game that gives you exactly what you want. And that’s why it’s impossible to tear yourself away from it.
Now do you understand why the world has gone mad?
